"Heavy sleeper" covers at least three different problems, and the app that solves one does nothing for the other two. Before the list, work out which one is yours, because it decides the whole answer.
- You never hear it. The alarm rings, runs its course, and you have no memory of any of it. This is depth of sleep plus habituation.
- You turn it off asleep. You do hear it, your hand deals with it, and you have no memory of that. Different problem, and the most fixable one.
- You hear it, snooze, and lose an hour. You are awake enough to decide. This one is not really an alarm problem at all.
Disclosure: this site belongs to Fifi, an iPhone alarm app, which is why it is excluded from the ranking below rather than placed at the top of it. App observations come from shipped builds captured 2026-08-02 and may not describe current versions; no pricing is quoted, because the figures captured were in a non-US currency and one of them was internally inconsistent.
First, the free one you already have
Apple Clock. Rings through silent, through Focus, at full volume, with no network involved. If your alarm is failing to ring, the problem is almost never Apple's Clock app — it is much more likely to be one of the ordinary causes.
Its one weakness is that dismissing it is free. If that is not your failure mode, stop here and save your money.
1. Task-gated alarms — for turning it off in your sleep
Alarmy is the largest of these. The alarm does not stop until you complete a mission: math, shaking the phone, walking somewhere and photographing it, a barcode scan. You can stack up to five on one alarm. It directly targets the half-asleep dismissal, which is the point.
The cost is the surrounding app: ad units on nearly every tab, some of them gambling-adjacent, a primed tracking-consent screen, and a 50%-off popup that fires before you have used it once. The full read is in Alarmy vs the iPhone Clock app.
Erly takes the same idea somewhere more physical — push-ups, or going outside — and sells the physiology behind it: movement raises cortisol, natural light resets the circadian clock. The light half is well established. The cortisol half is only half true: exercise raises cortisol above an intensity threshold of roughly 60% VO₂max, and below it the response is flat or slightly negative. Whether a set of push-ups at 6am clears that bar depends on the set and on you, which is a less quotable claim than the one being sold. Its onboarding is a long commitment quiz that reflects your own answers back at you before asking for money, and it leans on an unsourced "84% of users report becoming a morning person after just 2 weeks" over a graph with no axis units. Treat that number as marketing.
Wayk is a third in this family, with eight mission types including make-your-bed and affirmation tasks. Worth one caution: across a full setup run it never asked permission to set real alarms, and one of its settings reads "Silence the alarm during my mission. It rings again if I leave the app" — which is how an app behaves when it is making the sound itself rather than your phone doing it. That may have changed since; here is how to check.
Best for: dismissing alarms while unconscious. Useless for: never hearing it at all, since a mission you sleep through is just a longer alarm.
2. Call-based alarms — for never hearing it
These wake you with an incoming call rather than a tone, on the theory that a ringing phone recruits a social reflex a beep does not.
MorningCall rings your phone for real, so you get the genuine incoming-call screen. The setup cost is real: you save a contact card it supplies and then hand-enable Emergency Bypass on it in the Contacts app, and the app's own warnings about duplicates suggest people get this wrong. It schedules a system alarm as a backup, which is the right call.
CallClock does the same thing with a much tidier setup — it handles the contact for you instead of sending you off to do it. Its default caller gallery is anime portraits and the product is built persona-first, alarm-second, which tells you who it is for. Whether it has any local fallback is unclear from the ten screens captured; if it genuinely has none, that is a single point of failure at 6 a.m.

Best for: alarms that have stopped registering as meaningful. Watch for: whether there is a local backup alarm at all.
3. What none of them fix
Every app on this list is trying to beat the same mechanism, and none of them beats it permanently.
Your brain filters out repeated stimulus that reliably means nothing. That is habituation, and it is why the alarm that worked brilliantly for two weeks stops working in the third. A mission you have done four hundred times becomes automatic. A call from a voice you have heard every morning for a year becomes a sound. Novelty buys time; it does not buy immunity. The properties that actually resist it are unpredictability, effort, and meaning, and no app can supply the third one on your behalf.
There is also a category of problem that no alarm app touches, and it is worth saying because the marketing in this space never does: if you are consistently unable to wake after adequate time in bed, that is a sleep-quantity or sleep-quality question and possibly a medical one. An app that makes it harder to dismiss the alarm is treating the symptom.
How to choose in two minutes
- Name your failure mode from the three at the top. This eliminates most of the list immediately.
- Check the app has real alarms by reading its permission prompts on a fresh install. If it only ever asks for notifications, it is not going to ring reliably no matter what the listing says.
- Check for a local fallback if it is call-based.
- Assume it stops working eventually, and pick the one whose failure you would mind least — because that is the state you will be in by month three.
The three failure modes at the top, and the ranking that follows from them, are reasoning rather than a research finding: no study compares these apps. What is sourced below is only the physiology each one claims.
